Things to do this Easter Weekend

The 2016 Boat Races – Sunday 27 March

For another year it’s Boat Races – the men’s race (which will start at 4.10pm) will be joined on the Tideway by the women’s race, starting an hour earlier at 3.10pm. The traditional rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge began in 1829 for chaps and 1927 for ladies, and it now attracts around 250,000 spectators to southwest London every year. The four-and-a-quarter mile course runs along the Thames from Putney Bridge to Mortlake and takes around 16 to 18 minutes (Cambridge holds the course record of 16 minutes 19 seconds, set in 1998). The key tube stations for spectators to use are Putney Bridge, Hammersmith and Kew Gardens, or use Putney, Barnes Bridge, Mortlake or Chiswick rail stations.

The 2016 Oxford v Cambridge Goat Race – Sunday 27 March – Spitalfields City Farm, Bethnal Green

Polish your horns and belt out those bleets, because London’s favourite farmyard fracas is back for an eighth year in 2016. The Goat Race is fast becoming as popular as its Thames-based rival (at least around the Time Out office), and sees two goats – one representing ‘Oxford’, the other ‘Cambridge’ – take part in a dash around the farm. The gates open at noon with lots to enjoy on the farm, including bands, booze and other fun, goat-related nonsense. The race takes place at some point between 2pm and 5pm, depending on the mood of the athletes. There’s an official bookie and sweepstake if you or your nanny fancy a flutter. Book tickets well in advance – the animals mustn’t get overcrowded and places sell out fast.

Easter Country Fair – Sunday 27 and Monday 28 March – River Lee Country Park

Go wild in the country over the Easter weekend at this two-day fair featuring heaps of traditional entertainment and outdoor fun. Visitors to the event, which is now in its third year, can enjoy jousting performances, birds of prey flying displays; miniature pony displays and stalls selling arts and crafts. The Goat Show is your chance to bottle feed lambs and kids, and those who visit the Medieval Village will encounter some fighting knights. There’ll also be plenty of food and drink available from the on-site bars. Book in advance via the Oakleigh Fairs website for discounted tickets.

Easter Chair Heaving – Monday 28 March – 12:00 noon to 9:00pm

The Blackheath Morris Men once more carry out the ancient tradition of heaving a lady into the air on a decorated chair. Takes place in Greenwich town centre – usually near the Cutty Sark.

Steam Day – Monday 28 March Starts at 12:30 pm

See a restored Victorian steam-pumping engine in action. The Markfield Beam Engine and Museum is located in Markfield Park (Tottenham, N15 4RB) and the site consists of the remains of the Tottenham sewage treatment works and pumping station. The works were operational for over one hundred years until 1964. The Beam Engine House has been fully renovated and restored as originally built and both the Beam Engine and Engine House are Grade II listed. Engine Steaming at 12:30pm to 1:15pm, 2:00pm to 2:45pm and 3:30 pm to 4:15pm.

Our Next Camera Club Outing – Saturday 2 April

Will be a London walk. Meet at London Bridge (exact location to be confirmed) at 10:30am.

Kerri Cup

At the Kerri Cup judging Andy Smith held back 6 images – “Great Tit” by Paul Whitmarsh, “Staircase at Tate Modern” by Vera Stevens, “Inside the Orbit’s Canopy” by Val Bluck, “Primary Colours” by Steve Jones, “Fall at Sheffield Park” by Steve Jones and “Tranquility” by Paul Whitmarsh. Andy chose “Tranquility” as the winner and “Fall at Sheffield Park” as the runner up. Congratulations to Paul Whitmarch and Steve Jones.
