What’s on at the Club tomorrow
Tomorrow is the Mike Gleave Cup (Nature) to be judged by Philip Pound. It’s the last meeting of the Club at the USC before the Christmas break, so after the competition we’ll have some nibbles, which you are welcome to contribute to, and do bring along any Christmas cards for other members.
Next week (14 December) is our Christmas Dinner at Assos.

Next Club Outing – Saturday 13 January
Our member David Lewis has offered to organise a visit to the Science Museum’s major ‘Illuminating India’ exhibition on Saturday 13 January, family and friends welcome. The exhibition, which is in the museum’s Level 2 Media Space, is a fascinating and well-curated survey of photography in India from the mid Nineteenth Century to the present day. It’s linked to a second exhibition at the museum, ‘5000 Years of Science and Innovation’. Both exhibitions are free. Meet David at Knightsbridge Station ticket office at 2.30pm for a short photographic street walk followed by a visit to the exhibition. Afterwards, join him in the museum café (next to the Media Centre) to discuss the exhibition. The café sells a range of light refreshments including some Indian food. The Magical Ice Kingdom at Hyde Park
An immersive walk-through experience that takes you on a journey through a spectacular frozen world of mermaids, gods and sea creatures. This must see attraction for all ages, full to the brim with ice sculptures, will take your breath away!
In the new Deep Sea Adventure, you’ll be transported into the depths of the ocean. You’ll discover a mermaid grotto and come face-to-face with an octopus battle. Take shelter in the temple of Neptune and meet mythical creatures along the way. You’ll be amazed by the lifelike and colourful ice sculptures. There are plenty of opportunities for selfies in the Magical Ice Kingdom, strike a pose behind the bubble wall or sit in Neptune’s grand throne. Don’t forget your camera for this attraction! With a setting of -10°C, be sure to dress warm with winter coat, hats and gloves.
The Shard’s Annual Festive Display – on now and until Sunday 31 December
The Shard will illuminate the skyline from dusk until early morning from 4 December with its fifth annual festive light show. With a very special theme that was unveiled on the first night, The Shard lights are a sparkling reminder to take a moment out of our busy days and look up to enjoy Western Europe’s highest art installation. Varying gradients, sparkles and patterns will differ each night, building to a crescendo at midnight and featuring a special one-off display on New Year’s Eve.
Christmas at St. Katherine Docks – on now and until Friday 15 December
Admire the picture-pretty St Katharine Docks as it’s draped in sparkly Christmas lights and be dazzled by the magnificent 30-foot (9-metre) tree twinkling with decorations. Catch some of your seasonal favourites during the Christmas-themed Floating Film Festival from 4 to 10 December (charges apply). Head over to the vibrant Christmas Food Market on 8 and 15 December, where you can do some last-minute Christmas shopping for foodie treats, tuck into festive snacks and sip on cool cocktails. There’s also plenty of live entertainment to enjoy, and even the chance to take part in rum tasting.
Crystal Palace Winterfest at Crystal Palace Park – Friday 8 December to Tuesday 2 January 2018 – free
Step into a Christmas wonderland as Crystal Palace Winterfest brings lots of festive fun to Crystal Palace Park. Enjoy an exciting ride on the rollercoaster, or take a leisurely trip on the observation wheel for spectacular views of the park. There’s also a cosy Christmas market packed with gifts and seasonal food, and a grotto where kids can meet Santa himself and take part in family activities and games.
Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square – Sunday 10 December from 5:30pm
Admire the magnificent Norwegian Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square as it’s switched on this week with thousands of sparkling lights. Come on Sunday from 5.30pm to see the fascinating crib ceremony, which features a torch lit procession and music from St Martin-in-the-Fields.

The London Pantomime Horse Race – Sunday 10 December – 12 noon
Starting from Devonport House, King William Walk, Greenwich. Free
Forget the Grand National, we know where the real horsy fun is to be had. Expect plenty of laughs, falls and horse-puns galore at the eighth London Pantomime Horse Race. This year, you can root for your favourite pop star, including Neddie Mercury, Beyonce-Neigh, Elvis Preseniegh and Noel & Liam Galloper, plus see performances from Maredonna, and Equestrian (Elton) John at the opening ceremony. The race kicks off at Devonport House, making six pit (and pub) stops along the way. The five left still standing must face the space hopper challenge, which whittles the race down to one worthy winner. The after-race Christmas show (£15) is topped off with a performance from an ABBA tribute act, a DJ pumping festive tunes and special guest appearances.
