New Members Evening Thursday 26 July

BCC President Steve Jones will be holding a meeting for new and prospective members on Thursday 26 July at 8pm at his house in Chislehurst.

This will enable you to meet other members and understand how the club works, how to enter competitions, and answer any questions you may have.

Steve will also be seeking to understand what further technical training you would benefit from so that additional small group or individual sessions can be arranged.

Vanessa Winship and Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing – on now and until 2 September

Vanessa Winship’s biggest UK show to date, the first UK retrospective of Dorothea Lange, and a huge group exhibition including work by photographers such as Mary Ellen Mark, Dayanita Singh, Alec Soth, Chris Steele-Perkins, Daido Moriyama, Diane Arbus, Pieter Hugo, Bruce Davidson, and Boris Mikhailov.

Pride in London Parade – Saturday 7 July

LGBT+ communities take over London’s streets for a massive celebration of love in all its forms

London’s getting its annual helping of rainbow flags, fun-loving crowds, and LGBT+ spirit. This year’s event will boast hundreds of floats and walking groups from across the LGBT+ spectrum, which will march through the heart of London from 12 noon onwards. 

The day will culminate in a big party in Trafalgar Square, with a line-up of pop-tastic entertainment. And all day long, Soho Square and the surrounding streets will be filled with members of the LGBT+ community and allies gathering to celebrate (and continue) the battle for equal rights.

 

Spectrum Photo Art’s Exhibition – on now and until Sunday 8 July at Denbies Wine Estate Gallery in London Road, Dorking. 

The gallery is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily.  At least one of the members of the group will be present on most days throughout the exhibition.

The six photographers – all members of camera clubs in the south and west London area – have diverse styles and choices of subject matter, which will make for a varied display of their photographic work.

Spectrum hopes you will be able to visit their exhibition and enjoy the other facilities at Denbies during your visit.

 

Kent County Show, Detling, Maidstone – Friday 6 to Sunday 8 July

This year they have plenty of exciting, interesting and fun displays and demonstrations for visitors. Whatever your interests, the Kent County Show will have a whole host of timed entertainment to see in between wandering around and discovering all the other aspects to the Show.  

Events include: The Household Cavalry – steeped in tradition and will perform at the Show dressed in full state ceremonial uniforms. The display will demonstrate the rigorous training, precision and excellence of the world’s only combat serving mounted ceremonial soldiers.

The ‘Spirit of Kent’ better known as ‘The Kent Spitfire’ is a MK9 TA805 with the No. 234 Squadron colours.  The aircraft flies in memory of No. 131 (County of Kent) Fighter Squadron.  The Kent Spitfire will complete an exciting display over the Kent Showground on all three Show days.

Titan the Robot will be back at the Show for Saturday and Sunday.  This giant robot is a must see for anyone coming to the Kent County Show.

‘Windrush: Songs in a Strange Land’ – British Library – Now and until Sunday 21 October – Free

To mark 70 years since the Empire Windrush carried hundreds of migrants from the Caribbean to London, this exhibition at the British Library explores why people came to the UK, what they left behind and how they have shaped Britain. Listen to jazz and calypso, hear personal reflections from some of the first Caribbean nurses to join the NHS, see manuscripts of Andrea Levy’s novel ‘Small Island’ and Benjamin Zephaniah’s poem ‘What Stephen Lawrence Has Taught Us’ and learn about Jamaican feminist poet Una Marson, who became the first black woman to be employed by the BBC. J R Turner is mentioned in the club’s 1994 centenary book as active in the 1960s, a period when the club had nearly 200 members. He won the Oakden Cup in 1960 and the Kerri Cup in 1965 and was active in the running of the club with roles including premises manager, KCPA representative and programme secretary. He moved away from the Bromley area in 1971.
