What’s on at the Club
Tomorrow will be the postponed judging of the PDI Competition Round 3 by Andy Smith. It is also hand in for the Colour Print Competition Round 3.
The venue will be the Stanley Follet Room at the Ripley Arts Centre, 24 Sundridge Avenue, Bromley BR1 2PXwith a 7:45pm start. That time and place will apply at least until and including Thursday 28 February. At the end of February if you think the earlier start is a good idea please let Val know so she can gauge if there is sufficient support. If you have not been to Ripley before the 314 bus passes the door, or the 162 and 269 busses to Plaistow Lane then an 8-minute walk.
Next week (14 February) will be the Colour Print Competition round 3.

Saturday 9 February to Sunday 10 March – Kew Gardens
Kew Gardens’ celebration of the orchid returns for its 24th year, this time with a focus on the plant life of Colombia.
Kew’s Orchid Festival will see the botanical garden’s tropical greenhouse bursting with colourful species and in 2019 they will reflect Colombia’s diverse landscape – from its tropical beaches to its snow-capped mountains.
The Prince of Wales Conservatory will be filled with the sights, smells and sounds of Colombia. Highlights will include a ‘Carnival of Animals’ display depicting a toucan in flight, a hanging sloth and swimming turtles all made up of hundreds of stunning orchids. A cascade of colourful hanging vandas will represent Colombia’s famous rainbow river, Caño Cristalesm and there’ll also be a forest scene with life-sized jaguars.
Don’t miss a dazzling display of hundreds of colourful butterflies suspended from the glasshouse ceiling and bright yellow orchids floating over the glasshouse pond depicting the legend of El Dorado.
Chinese New Year Celebrations – Xin Nian Kuai Le!
V&A Museum of Childhood, Bethnal Green – Saturday 9 February – 11:00am
Dance performances and music will fill the Museum of Childhood in celebration of Chinese New Year and the year of the pig. Take part in a calligraphy workshop, browse craft stalls and feast your eyes on lovely work in a Chinese children’s art exhibition.
Chinatown– Sunday 10 February
Welcome in the ‘Year of the Pig’ at this massive Chinese New Year celebration, which will fill most of the West End with music, acrobatic and activities. Dragon and lion dances will kick things off on Charing Cross Road at 10am, shimmying down through the streets to China Town. At noon, Trafalgar Square’s main stages will spring into action with traditional dance shows, contemporary hip-hop acts and Chinese performers. Food trucks will also be stationed there and restaurants in Chinatown will have special festive treats on their menus. If you’ve got kids in tow, you can entertain them with calligraphy workshops, dressing up and performances in the Leicester Square family zone before heading back to Trafalgar Square for the closing pyrotechnics display.
National Maritime Museum (Greenwich) – Saturday 9 February – 11:00am-4:00pm
Traditional lion dances, theatre performances, a dragon dance workshop and themed crafts are just some of the family-friendly activities at this fun day, which celebrates Chinese New Year. Free, just turn up,
NEW EXHIBITIONS: It’s opening weekend for several Exhibitions
Don McCullin: Work by war photographer Don McCullin comes to Tate Britain, showcasing photos taken over a 60-year period, in Vietnam, Northern Ireland and Syria. Tate Britain, £18, book ahead, 5 February-6 May

Swinging London: Sixties designers Mary Quant and Terence Conran are the main focus of the Swinging London exhibition, which features work by the duo, as well as architects, designers, photographers and artists who were part of the Chelsea Set at the time. Bedrooms of London: This new photo exhibition documents the living conditions of London’s most disadvantaged children. Photographer Katie Wilson highlights the damaging consequences for children arising from the shortage of social housing in London. Nelson Mandela: Photos, video clips and artefacts on loan from museums around the world combine to tell the story of one of South Africa’s most famous people, Nelson Mandela, from being born in a rural village to spending 27 years in prison, to being elected as president. London Stories: London Transport Museum’s new exhibition showcases 100 entries from the Poster Prize for Illustration 2019 competition. The theme this year is London Stories, and artists were tasked with representing a London story — current, historical, real or fictional — in a single image.
