Next week (7 May) is our open Panel Competition; usual rules apply, where members will have a chance to judge the entries. Next week is also the summer project briefing.

What’s on this Bank Holiday Weekend

Canalway Cavalcade Festival – Saturday 2, Sunday 3 and Monday 4 May

Canalway Cavalcade is a waterways boaters’ gathering that has been taking place at Little Venice since 1983. Organised by Inland Waterways Association volunteers, there will be an array of boats, trade show stalls and boaters gathering at the festival. As well as boating activities there is Morris dancing, a tasty selection of food stalls, a real-ale bar, little shops selling the weird and the wonderful and most of all a lovely picturesque view of the many beautiful narrow boats. The illuminated procession of boats this year is not to be missed. Starting in The Pool at 9.30am and finishing 10pm with a fantastic live band playing from the bandstand. Free.

Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market – Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 May

Stroll along the Riverside Walkway between the OXO Tower and Waterloo Bridge, to sample beef rendang, chicken satay and spicy laksa from around 15 Malaysian restaurants. Cookery demonstrations, live music, dance performances and sessions with top Malaysian and British chefs will take place throughout the day, and traditional Malaysian ingredients will also be available to buy.

Guided tours of the Albert Memorial – Sunday 3 May

The guided tour of the Albert Memorial gives you exclusive access inside the memorial railings, so you can appreciate up close the craftsmanship and the bravura marble carving of the Parnassus frieze comprising 169 figures of renowned poets, musicians, painters, sculptors and architects. The tours start at 2:00pm and 3:00pm and last 45-50 minutes. The guided tour costs £7. There is no need to book unless you are a group. Please meet directly in front of the memorial, on the side closest to the road and the Albert Hall.

Petts Wood May Fayre – Monday 4 May – 10:00am to 16:00pm

On at the Memorial Hall, Petts Wood Road. All the usual May Fayre activities, e.g. May Queen Parade through Petts Wood, maypole dancing, live performance on 2 stages. More info on www.pettswoodhall.co.uk/mayfayre. Free.

Saturday 13 June – Medieval Fair at Faversham by train. If you would like to come along please put your name on the list on the Noticeboard or let me know by e-mail. A weekend-long Medieval Fair celebrating Faversham’s involvement in the Magna Carta 800th anniversary.  Held in Faversham’s historic town centre there will be re-enactments, tournaments, birds of prey, battles, plays, a medieval camp, music, dancing, juggling, stalls, food and plenty of hands-on crafts and activities.  The town will come alive with street decorations, period dress and medieval music, market stalls and lovely independent shops and restaurants, with plenty of delicious food and drink.

 

Saturday 4 July – River Festival at Chatham by train.  If you would like to come along please put your name on the list on the Noticeboard or let me know by e-mail. Chatham Waterfront is the place to be on 4 July, when yachts and sailing vessels of every kind will join together for the Medway River Festival. There will be river displays and races running all day, along with food stalls, exhibitions and live music. And don’t forget there is also the historic dockyard.

 

Friday 7 to Monday 10 August – Portsmouth weekend.
