Things to do this weekend and soon

Emergency! London 1914 at London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, Clerkenwell, EC1R 0HB – Saturday 9 August – 9:30 am to 4:45 pm – Free

In response to the outbreak of First World War, the London County Council established the Emergency Measures committee to report on the state of the city and its people. Keeping tabs on food supplies and employment, reports were compiled by council officers and filed at County Hall. Taking these fascinating reports and building a picture of the city with photographs, maps and documents from the period, this exhibition will explore London as it was one hundred years ago, looking at changes to the city and the lives of Londoners as the country went to war.

Clarkshaws Brewery Summer Open Day – Sunday 10 August – 12 noon

This East Dulwich microbrewery is relatively new to London’s flourishing independent beer scene, but thanks to interesting flavours, local ingredients and an all-vegetarian brewing method they’re likely to stick around. Their open day is a chance to try some of their creations straight from the source, find out more about the processes and equipment in guided site tours and take away a selection of your favourites, too. Stomach-liners come in the form of Capo Caccia’s Sardinian charcuterie and cheeses, Pastificio Mansi’s artisan pasta and Avocado Café’s dips and dishes. Borough Market’s lauded Gelateria 3bis will be serving up a new gelato especially for the occasion. Clarkshaws Brewery can be found at Tyrrell Trading Estate, Tyrrell Road, SE22 9NA (www.clarkshaws.co.uk/events.html).

Tower of London

An installation of 888,246 ceramic poppies, one for each British and Colonial fatality during World War I, has been unveiled to mark 100 years since Britain’s first full day of involvement in WWI. The poppies, created in collaboration with artist Paul Cummins and stage designer Tom Piper, will encircle the London Landmark until Tuesday 11 November and serve as a backdrop to a programme of performances and events to further commemorate the centenary. During World War I the Tower’s moat was used to swear in over 1,600 men who had enlisted by the end of August 1914 at the recruitment station in the City to form the 10th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers – the so called ‘stock brokers battalion’ who fought for the duration of the war.
