What’s on at the Club Tonight
Tonight is the Steinberger Cup competition to be judged by Jeff Royce. It’s the last meeting of the Club before the Christmas break so after the competition we’ll have some nibbles, which you are welcome to contribute to and do bring along any Christmas cards for other members.
Things to do this weekend
Canal & River Trust – City Road Lock Free Open Weekend – Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December – 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.
Visitors will have the rare opportunity to venture to the bottom of City Road Lock and walk along the original Victorian, 200-year-old brickwork and see up close one of the finest examples of working heritage in the world.
The open weekend is part of a national programme of events showcasing restoration work by the Canal and River Trust. The works at City Road Lock involve replacing the top lock gates and repairing the bottom lock gates. City Road Lock free visitor open weekend, City Road Lock, Regent’s Canal, Islington, N1 8LE.
London Pantomime Horse Race – Sunday, 14 December – starts at 11:00 am
It’s the Year Of The Horse and on Sunday 14th Greenwich will again be awash with them, albeit, of the pantomime variety. Now in its 5th year, the event takes on a special Science Fiction theme. The event begins at 11:00 am with the notorious Opening Ceremony – ahead of the race at 1:00 pm. Led by the Black Knights Drum and Bugle Corp, the UK Garrison will deliver a battalion of Stormtroopers and Darth Vader who will march from Greenwich’s Cutty Sark up to Devonport House. Here they will be joined by The Rebel Alliance Panto Horses, Jedi Knights and Princess Leia before the Race begins its perilous journey through the streets of Greenwich. The ceremony will be hosted by Anna Fiorentini whose film and stage school performers will also be appearing to get the crowds dancing and singing. Television horse racing legend John McCririck will be giving some commentary and also tips on whom to back in the field whilst former Grange Hill star Erkan Mustafa will be there among the crowds as a roving reporter.
Beyond the horses, the day continues with an After-Race Xmas Party at The Greenwich Tavern from 2:30 pm and features Comedian and Actor Stephen Frost (Whose Line Is It Anyway) hosting proceedings. Mummers Play and Morris Dancing – Sunday 14 December – 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm
The Red House, Red House Lane, Bexleyheath DA6 8JF
Watch the local Morris troupe perform a traditional Mummers play. This is an outdoor event so wrap up warm. No need to book. Free admission (normal garden fees apply).

Photography Competition
Hidden Details – closing date for entries 5 January 2015
Open to amateurs of all ages this competition aims to showcase photographs that capture the Old Royal Naval College from an unusual angle or setting. It’s partly sponsored by the RPS, Aperture Woolwich PS and Waterstones.
