Programme for 2015/2016 Season

Our new season starts on Thursday 10 September with Table Top Photography. Full details of the coming programme for 2015/2016 are available in the member area above.

What’s on this Weekend

VJ Day commemorations in Central London – Saturday 15 August Starts at 2:00 pm

As part of the VJ Day commemorations in Central London, there will be a military flypast and traditional Drumhead Service on Horse Guards Parade attended by senior political and military representatives from the UK and her Allies, veterans of the Far East campaign, former Prisoners of War, civilian internees and their families. Followed by current members of the Armed Forces leading veterans and their families in a VJ Parade down Whitehall. Big screens will be made available in and around Whitehall.

Red Bull Air Race Championships – Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August

The loud, fast and frankly terrifying Red Bull Air Race returns for 2015, with the British leg of the Championship being hosted for a second year at Royal Ascot. Daredevil pilots including World Champions, Paul Bonhomme and Nigel Lamb will negotiate the racecourse at just a few metres about the ground, barrel-rolling and looping their way through obstacles at some 230mph. There’ll be plenty of thrills, but not – hopefully – any spills.

Our Next Club Outing

Olympic Park and the Orbit – Saturday 19 September – for more detail see Noticeboard at our first meeting on 10 September.

Photography Exhibitions

Roger Hooper – Gallery@oxo, London – ends Sunday 16 August – Free

Roger Hooper has travelled the seven continents of the world to take awe-inspiring wildlife photos. Having worked extensively for WWF, much of his shots focus on preserving the beauty of endangered species. African animals are another interest, many of which feature in this exhibition of his photography.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year – Royal Geographical Society, London – until 5 September – Free

You can look at this annual award for the best of the past year’s travel photography in two ways. The first, perhaps cynical way, is to thank these show-offs a bunch for reminding you of all the amazing destinations you spectacularly failed to make it to last year, or indeed any year. Or, with a leap of the imagination and a little poetry in your heart, you can allow yourself to be transported to places as far afield as the Peruvian Andes, the foothills of the Himalayas and the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. It’s like taking a long-haul holiday in your lunch hour, with none of the tedium of travel. Not that you’d want to be within 100 miles of where Joshua Holko’s bloody-faced polar bear is having its lunch (which, Holko helpfully warns us, is ‘80 degrees north of Svalbard in the Arctic’) – even if it is the winner of the ‘wild and vibrant’ category.

Something Different

The National Gallery are holding a series of six free interactive lectures around the subject of photography. They will be investigating how photography has shaped both the Gallery and the history of Western European painting. They will also be offering advice and lessons of how to capture the pictures in their collection. The full series of the free lectures and workshops can be found here.  http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/photography-talks
