Women In Front – Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September – 11:00am – 4:00pm – Free

A public art exhibition commemorating the contribution of women to the war effort at home and at the front in the First World War.

In March 1917, the Women’s War Work Subcommittee was formed to collect materials covering the contribution of women to the war effort for a National War Museum. The subcommittee commissioned photographers Horace Nicholls, George Parnham Lewis, and Olive Edlis (covering France) to record the work undertaken by women, this culminated in an exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1918, attracting 82,000 visitors. 100 years later, Women In Front through the artworks on display, tells the stories of women’s lives before the war, their war work, and what happened to them afterwards.

The exhibition funded by Southwark Council Neighbourhood Fund is in the Chapel, Ladywell Cemetery (Ladywell Road, SE13 7HY) as part of National Cemeteries Week.

There is also a Guided walk on Sunday 10 September 2pm-3.30pm linking with the theme of the exhibition. Meet at the Ladywell Chapel.

Thames Barrier Annual Test Closure – Sunday 10 September

Once a year, the Environment Agency holds a full tide test closure of the Thames Barrier. The Barrier gates rotate by 90 degrees into the fully closed defence position stopping the tide going upstream into London. As the tide continues to come in, a higher level of water will build up downstream of the Barrier creating a different water level either side of the gates. Shortly after high tide, the gates will rotate further creating a 2-metre gap underneath (underspill). This in turn creates a white water rush effect behind each of the massive gate structures attracting birds to feed on small fish. This ‘underspill’ lasts approximately 2 hours.

There will be various fun and educational activities for children, talks, demonstrations, information and display stands between 12:00 – 18:00.

Test closure event is free, but there is a fee for entry to the Information Centre

There will be a wide selection of trade stands, so there are plenty of chances to talk and perhaps buy at special prices.

The venue is near to the NEC, so there are convenient road, rail and air links. Tickets are held to the same price as two years ago for this event.
