Annual Exhibition – Awards Evening

Looking forward to seeing you all this evening, 4th floor of the Library at 7.30 pm.  During the Exhibition we won’t be meeting at the USC, so our next meeting at the USC is on Thursday 6 June when details will be given about this year’s summer project.  Thanks go to everyone who helped set up the Exhibition yesterday, it’s looking really good.

The Club’s Next Outing – Saturday 6 July 2013

Is a coach trip to Dungeness. We leave Bromley South at 9 a.m.  Travelling to the South of England Rare Breeds Centre (“RBC”) (www.rarebreeds.org.uk)

The RBC is owned by a charity (Canterbury Oast Trust) (“COT”) which provides long term residential care for people with a learning disability.

The RBC is a tourist attraction. Any profits help to fund COT.  They are putting on a special bird of prey event just for us – as photographers.

We then continue our journey to Dungeness, stopping at the Pilot Inn for lunch. The Pilot Inn is well known for its fish (maybe because of its closeness to the power station!).  We then spend the afternoon at Dungeness  photographing boats, shacks, plants, shore, steam railway, etc.  Another alternative is to visit to the RSPB Reserve. We plan to leave Dungeness at about 6 p.m.  The cost will be about £25.00 which includes a donation to the RBC.  Lunch is, of course, extra.  If interested please put your name on the list at the USC or let Betty Deshmukh, Peter Ergis or me know.

Things to see/do this weekend

Nunhead Cemetery Open Day –  11:00 am – 5:00 pm. Tours of the cemetery, visits to the chapel and crypt – not usually open – guidance on  family history, plus food and drinks at their café.   Free, but  donation would be appreciated.

Brands Hatch Photographic Day Out on Sunday 26 May 2013

Masters Historic Festival at Brands Hatch (GP) over the Bank Holiday Weekend.  The Masters FIA historic F1 cars being run on the full grand prix circuit.  Ticket price: adult in advance on line £18, on gate £22, senior citizens on gate only £15, child 12 and under free.  For full details 0843 453 9000  www.motorsportvision.co.uk

Glyn Bareham (who recently showed some of his super motor racing and landscape photos at the Club) is again offering help and advice on taking photos of the racing at Brands Hatch.

If you don’t know Brands, as you go through the main gate keep going straight ahead past the back of the grandstands and a row of shops when you get to the end you will see a building (the Kentagon) in front of you, we will be meeting in front of this at 9 am.  Last year 60 people turned up so you should have no trouble seeing everyone with photography bags etc.   In the event of any hold ups etc. Glyn’s mobile on the day will be 07913 733392.  Although this is a fun day for all, as usual help and advice will be available on the day for anyone wishing it.  Glyn Bareham 01622 751299    glynbareham@blueyonder.co.uk.  After meeting up at 9am we show you the points on the track that you can get different types of shots from, people are free to do whatever they want but if any tuition is wanted we take those requesting it to a part of the track that allows us to give advice and help with whatever aspect is required, the most frequent request is for help with panning shots.  It’s always suggested that a walk around the paddock in the lunch break is a most worthwhile thing to do.  Suggested lens choice would be wide to 70mm or so for the paddock and anything longer than this for around the circuit, an 80 to 200 or so being ideal in most spots, longer if you have it for one or two other points around.  Meeting up at the end to chat over a drink whilst looking at some of the shots is optional.

Damien Demolder Photography Course – Special Offer

In March this year, Damien Demolder (editor of Amateur Photographer) presented a well received Wratten Lecture at Croydon Camera Club.  The Wratten Lecture is held biennially when they invite a well known figure in the world of photography to give a presentation.  Admission is by ticket and the event is open to anyone with an interest in photography.

During the presentation, Damien Demolder offered to run one of his street photography courses in central London at a specially reduced rate for members of Croydon Camera Club.  Normally the cost is £180 for the day, but he has reduced this to £95 subject to attendees providing their own lunch.

The course is for ten people and currently there are some spare places.  With Damien’s agreement Mike Farley is extending the invitation to the other clubs in the South London Federation.  Attendance at the Wratten Lecture is not a prerequisite and everyone will have the opportunity to put into practice under Damien’s tutelage the lessons imparted during the evening.

At present, there are two provisional days for the course, 6 and 20 July, although it will only be held on the date which proves most suitable for the majority.  It is planned to start at 11:00 am and finish at 6:00 pm.

If anyone is interested, could they respond directly to Mike on his e-mail address at ccc@hurstview.com, indicating a date if there is a preference.  Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and an early response would be appreciated to allow the arrangements to be made.  From what was heard at the Wratten Lecture, it promises to be a good day’s photography.  Further information is available from the Croydon Camera Club Forum at this link.

Information about Adobe

Adobe has said it will no longer be developing its Creative Suite range of software, leaving its subscription and cloud-based Creative Cloud as the only way of accessing the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe has been trying to encourage users away from the traditional one-off payment licenses and on to a monthly payment model, with features such as online storage and syncing between devices. This latest move ups the ante by making it the only option for future versions of the software.

Adobe is clearly concerned about alienating existing users and has set the pricing of its Creative Cloud products at a similar level to its existing software. The cost of licensing just Photoshop CC over 18 months (the typical life-span of a version of Photoshop), is similar to the existing version-to-version upgrade prices, if you commit to a 24-month contract. Paying to use Photoshop CC on an ad-hoc, on/off basis will cost more (though opening the option of only paying for the software when you need it).

Adobe says it will continue to support CS6 but will not be replacing it. This allows it to focus its efforts on a single line of products, rather than trying to support both, in tandem. It also says it will allow the addition of processor-intensive features, such as Camera Shake Reduction tool, where the work can be conducted in the cloud.

To soften the blow, Adobe is offering discounted rates for current owners of Creative Suite (including previous versions), valid until August 2013. The move will not affect Lightroom customers, who will continue to be able to purchase ‘perpetual’ licenses.

However, while the move clearly makes sense for a company whose software has always been so widely pirated, such a dramatic move will undoubtedly be unsettling for many people who have always thought of software as a one-off purchase.

Adobe has published an open letter to its users and says it wants to start a dialogue with its user-base over the changes.

Quite  what happens if the P.C. is not connected to the internet is not made clear.
