RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch – 26-28 January

This January the RSPB is celebrating 40 years of counting garden birds in its annual appeal to get people birdspotting all around the country. From 26-28 January, everyone is invited to watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three days. Only count the birds that land, not those flying over and tell the RSPB the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour. By taking part in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey, you’ll be helping the RSPB with an annual snapshot into how our wildlife is faring. rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

English Civil War Re-Enactment – Sunday 27 January

Each year hundreds of re-enactors playing pikemen, musketeers, artillery, cavalry and camp followers of the Royalist side in the English Civil War march in the footsteps of King Charles I to commemorate his execution by Parliament in 1649.

The Whitehall March begins on the Mall outside St James’ Palace at 11.00am, from where it will proceed down the Mall and assemble on Horse Guards Parade. Go to get immersed in a slice of British history, or arrive early to chat with the soldiers, try the equipment and find out more about the English Civil War.
