What’s on this weekend and soon

Monochrome exhibition – Saturday 28 May to Wednesday 1 June, open daily from 10:00am to 3:00pm at South Quay Plaza, 189 Marsh Wall, E14 9SR. The nearest station is South Quay on DLR. Entry is free.

The Monochrome format simplifies and strengthens our photographs. Highlighting patterns of light and shadow, or light falling across a surface to emphasize grainy textures. An effective monochrome is reliant on its composition. The Photographic Angle always encourage submissions from all over the world but the high quality work produced here in Britain stood out, and they chose more work by British photographers than with some of their other recent exhibition themes. The Kent Garden Show – Saturday 28 to Monday 30 May – 9:30am to 5:00pm at The Kent Showgrounds, Detling, Maidstone ME14 3JF

A wide selection of plants, sundries, floral displays, feature gardens, expert forums, brass band, etc. etc.

Chelsea in Bloom – until Saturday 28 May

Offering a more affordable floral tribute than its neighbour, the venerable Chelsea Flower Show, this colourful festival sees 37 Chelsea retailers compete to make the most beautiful flowery display in their store windows and on shop fronts. Pick up a trail map or just hitch a free rickshaw ride from Sloane Square to see the lot, before settling in the pop-up gin bar.

Spencer House Garden Open Day – Sunday 29 May

The restored, eighteenth-century garden, originally designed by Henry Holland, is open just twice this summer, to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the restoration and re-opening to the public of Spencer House (27 St James’s Place, SW1A 1NR – Green Park Tube). Entry is by timed ticket (available from 10.30am on the day)
