Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival, Guildhall Yard – Sunday 29 September
It’s easy to spot a Pearly: they wear suits and hats covered in hundreds of shiny buttons! The origins of this 125-year-old tradition is rooted in charity, each Pearly King and Queen fundraise all year round. As September rolls around, it’s time for Guildhall Yard to welcome the cockney masses for a shindig Dick van Dyke would give his right arm to muscle in on. The annual event features traditional English entertainment including maypole dancing, Morris dancers and a marching band – be prepared to declare your London pride by shouting along to ‘Maybe It’s Because I’m a Londoner’ – before embarking on a parade around the City of London to St Mary-le-Bow Church for the 3pm service. The event is free but harvest festival offerings (typically of non-perishable goods and toiletries) are welcome and will be donated to the Whitechapel Mission. If you fancy becoming a Pearly, you’ll have to marry into one of the original families, it’s a hereditary title, much like the Royal Family. The majority of traditional cockneys may have been priced out of London but events like this are a brilliant opportunity to enjoy a proper East End knees up.
Regatta London – Sunday 29 September from 7:30am
There’s a very rare opportunity to see the tide stopped along the Thames today, as a routine test of the Thames Barrier takes place. To take advantage of the calmer water conditions, Regatta London sees all manner of water sports happening on the river. Kayaks, canoes and paddleboards take one of two special routes, and although it’s too late to sign up, you can still watch the action from the riverbanks, or from the two event areas in Putney and Greenwich. Between Hammersmith and Greenwich, free to watch, just turn up.
Sheep Drive – Sunday 29 September – 10:00am-5:00pm
You’d be baa-rmy to miss this one. One of London’s odder traditions, the Sheep Drive over London Bridge is exactly what it sounds like. Michael Portillo kicks things off this year (an honour previously held by Alan Titchmarsh and Mary Berry). Places have sold out to have a go at the herding, but you can still turn up to watch. London Bridge, free to watch (donations to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the Woolmen’s Charitable Trust welcome).
Japan Matsuri – Sunday 29 September from 10:00am
The festival of Japanese culture returns for 2019, filling Trafalgar Square with martial arts, traditional crafts, live music and family activities. Kids will get to try their hand at origami, manga art and calligraphy, before displaying their creations in front of the National Portrait Gallery. Food and drink stalls will introduce visitors to delicious Japanese cuisine with plenty of tasters of popular dishes and products too.
Forthcoming Camera Club Outings
Birmingham Day Trip: Christmas Markets and Walking Tour – Saturday 23 November 2019
Free but please book your own train tickets (currently there are plenty of cheap tickets available from nationalrail.co.uk for around £15 to £30 return so it’s worth booking early!)
Catch the 9.23 train from Euston to Birmingham New Street (other, slightly longer options are available from Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill so please meet us at New Street Station at 10.50am if you choose one of these). It’s then up to you what time you leave Birmingham – trains back to London run until around 10pm.
When we get to Birmingham, there are two possible walking tour options: a City Centre Walk or a Digbeth Graffiti Walk. We can decide as a group which we’d prefer to do, divide into two groups or do both if we have time and are feeling active! Afterwards, there will be time to spend at Birmingham’s Christmas Markets: the largest German market outside of Germany/Austria.
Please book your own train tickets but let Charlotte know that you’re joining this outing too.
Christmas Meal – Thursday 12 December
Please put this date in your diary. Details to be confirmed.
Highgate Cemetery Tour – Sunday 12 January 2020 – £12 per person (friends/relatives welcome too)
Meet at the entrance to the East Cemetery at 11:00am to explore this section. We can then go for lunch together in one of the nearby pubs before returning to the West Cemetery for a private tour at 2.30pm. No tripods unfortunately.
Please email Charlotte if you’d like to come and we will collect payment at a later date.
York/Whitby – Sunday 5th to Tuesday 7 April 2020
Sunday 5 April: travel up to York in the morning, walking tour around the city in the afternoon and time for sunset/evening photography
Monday 6 April: private minibus trip to Whitby via the York Moors, Goathland etc. – full itinerary to be confirmed (maximum 16 people so first come, first served)
Tuesday 7 April: more time in York before travelling back to London in the afternoon/evening
Currently £106 for two nights’ accommodation at the Travelodge Central Layerthorpe (per room) plus around £50 for the day trip (depending on final numbers).
Charlotte will organise the above but you’ll need to book your own train tickets – these go on sale 12 weeks in advance so please put 12 January in your diaries to get the best price! We’ll send out a reminder nearer the time too.
As Charlotte will have to pay in full for the Travelodge accommodation to get the saver rates, it’d be great if you could email her to let her know that you’re coming and she will contact you to give her bank details. The cost is £106 (this forms your non-refundable deposit). If you’d like to share a room, please her know who you’re sharing with and transfer £53 each. Partners/relatives/friends are welcome on this trip.
