Bromley Camera Club Newsletter – 24 August 2020

I hope you are all still keeping well.

Just by way of reminder I’m repeating parts of the last Newsletter concerning our vacancy for our Executive Committee and the first three weeks of competitions.

“The Executive Committee recently met and although the USC has opened it has been decided that we will continue with the Zoom meetings until Christmas, by which time it is hoped that a vaccine will be available and we can more or less go back to normal. The AGM which usually starts the season has been put back to January.

At the AGM we will have a vacancy on our Executive Committee, which would also include the role of Programme Secretary. The programme for 2020/2021 is in place and the current secretary is willing to assist whoever takes on the role. 

Thursday 10 September

This will be the three groups of Summer Project presentations.

It is also hand in for the Covid Cup. This is a new cup for up to 3 images per member, selected by the member, from all their entries to the Zoom evenings. These images must have been entered into the various themed categories even if the member did not attend the Zoom meeting but their images were included in the slideshow on the night. None of the images should be edited, or altered, in any way from the way they were entered. PDIs submitted to the PDI Secretary ((pdisecretary@bromleycameraclub.org.uk) on or before the date.

Covid Cup to be judged by Paul AdamsARPS DPAGB FDPS

It is also hand in for the Panel Competition. You may remember this was planned for early in the year but because of Covid-19 it was deferred. This will now be a PDI competition. Your panel should consist of 3 to 5 images on the theme of “Elements” and you can enter more than one panel if you wish. This is a one-class competition. PDIs submitted to the PDI Secretary (pdisecretary@bromleycameraclub.org.uk) on or before the date. Late entries may be disallowed.

It is not too late to sign up to join the meetings each week you just need to download an app called Zoom Meetings.  You also need to let Greg (webmaster@bromleycameraclub.org.uk) have a note of your email address. What will then happen is that on Thursday Greg will email you with a meeting invite. If you accept this you will be patched in to all those others who have joined the meeting. You do not have to have your face on the screen, or have your voice heard you can just listen to what is said by the judge. If you would like more info about Zoom please do not hesitate to speak to Brian (pdisecretary@bromleycameraclub.org.uk) and he will be more than willing to talk you through the process. Start time is 8:00pm but you can log in at any time during the meeting.

Open House Festival fortnight begins with the weekend event on 19 and 20 September and runs until 27 September

Just a heads up that this year’s programme will be launched on 26 August if you want to view the buildings and walks.  I believe this will be a ticketed event.

Whitstable Photographic Group Exhibition – 20 August to 2 September.

If you are anywhere near Whitstable they have a real exhibition. It’s in the windows of the Horsebridge Centre in Whitstable so you can view it from the pavement outside, in a COVID-19 safe way.

Greenwich & Docklands International Festival

In Memoriam – Woolwich Common – Friday 28 to Monday 31 August (see photo above)

Luke Jerram’s ceremonial art installation has been created as a memorial to those we have lost in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The artwork has also been made in tribute to the NHS staff and volunteers who have worked so tirelessly to care for so many. Created from bed sheets, In Memoriam is intended to be an evocative symbol of local, national and international solidarity, as a space for reflection, remembrance, and recognition. Free

Dacres Wood Nature Reserve – Saturday 29 August – 1 to 4pm

Monthly open day at a wood and nature reserve that’s next to the railway at Forest Hill.

It was formerly part of a large Victorian garden, and includes an important remnant of the Croydon Canal, closed in 1841.

There is a diverse invertebrate fauna, including several species of particular note and a number of useful invertebrate habitats.

The site’s close abutment to a railway line makes possible potential colonisation and the spread of many species up this ‘green corridor’.

You will find them at the end of a drive called Honeyfield Mews which is off Dacres Road, Forest Hill, just past Catling Close on the right coming from Forest Hill, just before on the left if coming from Sydenham. Free

Step inside Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage – on until 20 September at the Garden Museum, London

A desolate windswept cottage has been transported to central London – minus the wind and desolation and now offers a rare chance to step inside Derek Jarman’s famously rural home.

It’s not his actual home, that’s still down in Dungeness, but the Garden Museum has transposed enough of the contents and built part of a replica to give a feel of the space that the artist and activist spent his last years surrounded by.

Of necessity, they’ve spread the exhibition out a bit more than originally planned, so some of the books and letters are in the main museum space, including the correspondence that inspired Beth Chatto’s famously arid gravel garden. Entry to the Museum is £10 and needs to be booked in advance.

Please see below email received from Mike Farley (Chairman of Croydon CC). 

“A few days ago one of our members was viciously attacked and robbed of his camera gear by two thugs while testing a new lens in woods close to his home.  Fortunately, he expects to make a full recovery from the injuries he sustained and the equipment is covered by insurance.  Among the items taken were both the new lens and the one it was intended to replace.

Would it be possible to circulate the details of the stolen equipment to other SLF clubs in case any of their members are offered it?  While it might be an outside chance, anything which could lead to the apprehension and conviction of the culprits has to be worth a try.  It goes without saying that should anyone encounter someone who has the gear in their possession, in a face to face situation especially, they should not do anything which jeopardises their personal safety.”
