RHS Photographic Competition 2013
Enter now to compete for the prestigious title of RHS Photographer of the Year and a share in the £5,500 prize fund. There is a cash prize of £1000 for the overall winner as well as prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in each of the six categories – plants, gardens, details, seasons, wildlife and people in the garden – with no limit on the number of entries you can submit. Winners and finalists also get a huge amount of exposure with their work featuring heavily in the UK and international press and being exhibited across all RHS Gardens. The RHS is always keen to promote great garden and plant photography, and this competition offers an opportunity for all professional or amateur photographers from anywhere in the world, to showcase their best garden-related images. Things to do this Bank Holiday Weekend
Carters Steam Fair – Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th and Monday 26th August – 12 noon to 8 pm at Victoria Park, Grove Road, E9 7DE.
Carters Steam Fair is renowned for being Europe’s premier vintage travelling funfair which contains a classic collection of Victorian steam powered fun fair rides ranging in date from the late 19th Century to the 1960s.
Half Price Entry to Kew Gardens – Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August – 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Visitors arriving after 3:30 pm can go into Kew Gardens for half price and this weekend the closing time is an hour later than usual at 7:30 pm.
Ripley Garden Party (24 Sundridge Avenue, BR1 2PX) – Saturday 24 August – 12.30 to 5 pm – adults £2, children free.

Sunday 25 August 2013 Tower Bridge at 4.15 pm
An exceptionally rare sight — as the UK’s only air-worthy heritage flying boat will fly along the Thames next week, and over Tower Bridge.
The event is to mark the 100th anniversary of a Daily Mail’s Round Britain Race back in the days when the newspaper used to sponsor a lot of aeronautical feats of endurance. It also happens to be the 70th birthday of the flying boat that will make the flypast.
What will happen is that the Catalina G-PBYA flying boat, which is currently based at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford will start a 5 day tour around the UK, deviating from the original route in order to fly over some significant landmarks.
Weather depending, the plane should have flown over Tower Bridge at 10:50am Wednesday (21st Aug) and then flew along the Thames to Kingston (10.55), down to Chessington then over to Weybridge (11am), before heading down to Southampton.
It returns on Sunday 25 August reversing the same route and passing over Tower Bridge at around 4:15pm.
